Craft Breweries Have Become Very Popular

by Dan Koester on September 17, 2012

In the 1970s, there were very few big brewing companies in the US. Those companies primarily made light lagers. People who wanted something else either paid for expensive imported beers, or they learned to make their own. Home brewing became very popular. Eventually, home brewing turned into craft brewing. Many craft breweries can trace their ancestry back to those hobbyists. They proved it was easy to make a beer that they liked, and they didn’t have to stick with those bland lagers that are put out by the large brewing companies.

By the end of the 1970s, there were important changes being made. In 1976, a tax differential was won for breweries that made less than 2 million dollars a year. The differential was for the first 60,000 barrels produced by those companies. In 1978, the American Home Brewers Association was formed and started publishing a magazine, which, among other things, publicized the new laws pertaining to home brewing.

In the 1980s, the Association of Brewers was created. This group was designed to help the microbreweries and all the craft brewers that were coming into existence. While there weren’t very many of them yet, through the 90s the craft beer movement continued to grow. Microbreweries were now making craft beer and selling it through grocery stores and local bars. In fact, some of the breweries owned their own bars or pubs so they had a built-in sales outlet. Many of these breweries are still local or regional, although the internet has made it easier for people all over the country, and indeed the world, to enjoy these beers.

By 2009, there were almost 1600 American craft brewery companies. These companies produced about 9 million barrels of beer. These beers have won over a lot of people because the beers are more flavorful. A craft brewery is able to make special beers, like seasonal or experimental beers. They are able to dabble in more flavors than a large company, and can quickly add these new beers to their production.

These breweries are only getting more popular. From their humble start as a hobby, craft breweries are now a multi-million dollar business, producing millions of gallons of beer and millions of happy customers and fans.

Craft Breweries-The Time Has Come to Try One

by Dan Koester on September 13, 2012

Did you know that there were 1,989 breweries operating in the United States for all or part of 2011? Of those, most were craft breweries. An American craft brewery is an independent, traditional and small brewer. How exactly are these terms defined and how do you know you are getting a craft beer rather than a mass produced one?

  • An independent brewer is one that isn’t owned or controlled by a member of the alcoholic beverage industry. The only exception to this is if the industry member is also a craft brewer. A member of the alcoholic beverage industry may own shares in a craft brewery, but these shares must be under 25%.
  • A traditional craft brewer is one whose volume is composed of a minimum of 50% of all malt beers or beers which make use of adjuncts to enhance the flavor. If a craft brewer has an all malt flagship, he or she also qualifies as a traditional brewer. This beer must represent the greatest volume of all brands produced by the brewer.
  • A small brewer is one who produces less than six million barrels of beer each year. The production of a particular brewer is determined by the rules of alternating proprietorships. When determining if a brewer falls into this category, flavored malt beverages won’t be considered.

Innovation is the trademark of craft breweries. Historic styles are taken and given a unique twist so they are unlike any craft beers produced before. Traditional ingredients are used and combined with non-traditional ingredients to create a new flavor. Each craft brewer will also have his or her own approach when it comes to dealing with customers. If you visited each craft brewery in the country, you would find that no two are alike. This is easy to do as most Americans have a craft brewery within ten miles of their home.

Craft brewers do a brisk business. In 2011 alone, retail dollar value for these businesses came in at $8.7 billion which was an increase over the previous year. When you count serving staff in brewpubs, around 103,585 jobs were provided by these brewers and the industry grew by 13% for the same year. Isn’t it time you tried a craft beer to see what you think?

Craft Brewers-An Important Element in American Society

September 10, 2012

According to the American Brewers Association, craft breweries are those breweries which are independent, traditional and small. These breweries produce less than 6,000,000 US beer barrels each year and cannot be more than 24% owned by an alcoholic beverage company which is anything other than a craft brewery. Those breweries which produce less than [...]
